My Arcade Announces New Handheld in Collaboration with Atari, The Gamestation Portable!

Atari and My Arcade announce a new collaboration handheld, the Gamestation Portable!

The GameStation Portable joins the GameStation Pocket Player and GameStation Pro as a new device in the My Arcade x Atari collaboration.

This new handheld will feature a much larger screen than the Pocket Player, coming in at 7″, something most of us are used to now in our handhelds. As you might expect, the control scheme isn’t your typical handheld affair though.

The Gamestation Portable has a unique set of controls, with a paddle, a “trak-ball”, and a d-pad on the left-hand side. The right side is your more traditional face buttons alongside your Select and Start buttons, we also have a “numpad” on this side. Controls for the relevant game will apparently light up, to let you know that those buttons/controls are used for that game.

YouTuber Jon from GenXGrownUp was at CES 2024 and got a close look at the device, which can offer us some good insights.

Along the top of the device, we’re treated to a 3.5mm port for headphones, an HDMI Out port for connecting to an external display such as a TV, a USB-C Port for charging, and a Micro SD card slot.

On the back of the device, we have 2 USB-C ports, presumably for controllers to be connected to the system. As well as a handy kickstand for keeping the device upright.

Typically, these My Arcade and Atari collaborations in the past have been consoles sold preloaded with classic games, and that’s no different with this one, with My Arcade saying that the system will ship with 200+ preloaded games. But the fact that this Gamestation Portable has a Micro SD slot, makes me believe this new console may be a fair bit more flexible, possibly even having an internet connection and being able to purchase or download additional games that Atari release?

Ultimately, we don’t know much about this handheld yet, I’m sure more details will drop once we get further into the year. My Arcade has said that they are aiming for a price point of around $149, however.

My Arcade is aiming for a Q4 2024 release for the Gamestation Portable, and in the past, they’ve been pretty accurate with their release dates, so expect this interesting handheld to hit the market this year.
